Going Back.

I wonder how often you feel the call of a place that you love? In your daydreams or night dreams, a-tugging at your heart. A yearning to be there, to feel the old magic of that wild land once again.

Soon, I will be journeying to one of the wild places I love so much…Mull, my favourite Hebridean Island. I will never tire of Mull. Wild, remote and mountainous. Full of wildlife… sea otters, sea eagles, seals, dolphins, deer and birds galore. The light on Mull is simply unbelievable. Hues of blue, pink, grey, silver, yellow, green almost every colour of nature can be seen in just one day.

I’ll be travelling around Mull on my bicycle of course! It’s an ideal place for cycling, especially on the west coast roads. Roads that are narrow and steep and less inviting to cars. There are also some off-road tracks plus plenty of secret places to wild camp!

Whenever I’m preparing to escape my day-to-day life and work, this poem, The Journey… by Mary Oliver, invariably pops into my mind;

‘though the whole house, began to tremble and you felt the old tug at your ankles…

little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world’
Sometimes, it is not easy to leave for the place that feeds the soul and nurtures the heart. Unexpected obstacles spring up, things can happen that seem more important. My thoughts are, not to let anything but a major crisis, stand in the way of a much-needed journey and break from modern life.
So, if you are planning a trip, for a few days or even just one day away… remember that not only you will benefit. In the long run so will everyone around you. A renewed smile, inner sparkle and energy will help strangers express friendliness, friends feel delighted and family feel proud!
I never fail to be surprised by the adventures that can happen in one short week and on my return I expect to have plenty of stories in my pockets!
Watch this space….!!
